n the past, many rivers
have been narrowed as a result of measures to straighten their course.
Artificial embankments and beds lead to a loss of habitats because
they do not provide hiding places for small aquatic organisms and
fish.
Watercourses with unengineered, richly structured
embankments and beds, on the other hand, provide important habitats
particularly for juvenile fish populations and the organisms on
which they feed.
A low proportion of sections with engineered embankments and beds
must certainly be evaluated as positive. |
