Water quality of watercourses and captive water (E13)

Rivers and lakes with a poor water quality have a lower species diversity than clean water courses. The indicator shows how the water quality of water courses and captive water is developing.

It has deliberately been defined in broad terms to avoid a commitment to investigating specific parameters.

Since the problematic substances in watercourses will not always be the same ones, the data that need to be reported for this indicator can be selected to reflect the potentially hazardous substances that are currently giving cause for concern. At the moment, for example, the focus is on all compounds containing nitrogen and phosphorus. Apart from potentially hazardous substances, the current rise in the water temperature is a very important aspect.

A reduction in the chemical burden in the water and in the water temperature must be evaluated as positive.
